Bathroom Tile Craziness

December 23, 2013 by Sarah

So what does a person do when Christmas is only 2 days away, you have two little children, and you need to prepare for a long road trip after Christmas?

Why install a bathroom floor, of course!  ðŸ™‚

My parents arrived in Richmond this weekend and our goal was to begin the finish work on the upstairs bathroom.  For those who may have forgotten, part of the reason we purchased this house back in March 2012 was because it offered us an additional 500 square feet, a second bathroom, and a lower mortgage payment.

Well, since time and money ran out before we moved in a year ago, the bathroom has remained untouched and we’ve continued being a one bathroom family since we moved in {we are used to it since it’s all we’ve ever really known as adults}.  We were able to get it all “roughed in” when the other renovations were happening but simply haven’t had the time or the money to touch any of the finish work {tile, bath fixtures, paint, etc.}.  So, the door has remained closed….until now!

My dad and Kev worked like beasts to get the tile down and are planning to grout the day after Christmas.  Crazy people, I tell ya!

I’m trying to keep the charm of an older home as you can probably see with the black and white pinwheel tile.  I spent a little time on Pinterest the other day trying to formulate my decorating plan.  We still have a ways to go with this project, as we are going to complete it one step at a time as the money is available.

Here’s where we started.  I thought we had taken a few more “before” pics, but this was the only one I could find.  To say it was dirty, grungy, and disgusting would be an understatement.  I remember trying to clean the bathroom really good after we had closed on the house and feeling like it was completely useless.  No matter how much scrubbing I did, it still felt dirty.

We ended up gutting the entire bathroom due to some structural issues that needed to be repaired.  It was probably a good thing so we were forced to start from scratch.  Here’s the new floor minus the grout.

Kevin thinks it’s funny that I chose the exact same tile that we originally had, but it will certainly not look the same once we are through.  Check out my pinterest board if you are curious what I’m thinking about doing in there.  We still have a long way to go on the project, but this was a great early Christmas present!  🙂
