My 10 Favorite Romantic Comedies

February 11, 2014 by Sarah

It’s officially Valentine’s week!  Whether you’ve been looking forward to it or dreading it, it’s here.  I’ve been working on something that I hope you will enjoy later in the week.  As a hint, let’s just say that I’ll be sharing a love story with you.  It just happens to be a very personal one.

In the meantime, I thought it would be fun to talk about movies.  Whether you have a special someone in your life or not, movies can be a great option for Valentine’s Day.

If you have a significant other, you can opt to stay in for an at-home date night and pick a good romantic comedy.  Kev is typically not interested in gushy movies, but he can usually stomach a romantic comedy.  It’s almost like the best of both worlds because I get a touch of romance and we both enjoy some good laughs.  Here is a list of our favorites.  We own some of them and watch them when we can’t agree on a movie. 🙂

Sweet Home Alabama*

We laugh so hard when we watch this movie.  Perhaps it’s because Kev is from the deep south or we love the concept of remembering your roots, but we always pop this one in when we need a good laugh with a good message.

Hitch*
Is there a movie with Will Smith in it that isn’t incredibly funny?  Our favorite scene of the entire movie is when Will Smith’s character teaches Kevin James’ character how NOT to dance.  We crack up every time!

13 Going on 30*
If you were a child of the 80’s, then this movie is for you.  I have been known to get up and dance during the “Thriller” group dance towards the beginning of the movie.

27 Dresses*

While it might be a bit extreme, any young woman can probably relate to the absurdity of bridesmaid dresses that “can be worn again.”  This is a cute and upbeat movie, but also addresses the downside to being a people-pleaser.

The Wedding Singer*

This is another gem that will satisfy your craving for all things 80’s.  From the funny music and hair to the funny old lady who pays Adam Sandler’s character with meatballs, you will laugh your way through this one.

The Wedding Planner*

Jennifer Lopez’s character starts off a little stiff and snarky when it comes to love and wedding planning.  But, it’s fun to watch her slowly let go of her jaded outlook on love and laugh at the antics of her meddling father.
The Holiday*

This might classify as a Christmas movie to some, but it can be enjoyed all year round.  Kate Winslet and Jack Black are a hoot and you will find yourself rooting for the underdogs to find the love they deserve.

Legally Blonde*
Reese Witherspoon is a genius in this movie.  Despite her over-the-top character, you fall in love with and cheer her on from the start.  She makes me want to be  Delta Nu and go to Harvard Law School!
Return to Me*

This movie pulls at my heart strings so much, but it is also filled to brim with some great comedy.  Jim Belushi and Bonnie Hunt’s characters are hysterically funny and the relationship between the four old men are what I hope for Kev to experience with his buddies someday.

The Proposal*

Betty White…need I say more?  Her character makes this movie and proves that a grandmother will milk her age/status to get whatever she wants.  Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock’s characters can hold their own too.

As I mentioned, we own quite a few of these but since it’s been a little while since I’ve seen others, you are viewing at your own risk.  I hope my memory hasn’t failed me. 🙂

What are your favorite romantic comedies?
